How We Help > Fundraising
The Chapel Hill Service League has had a long history of providing financial assistance to the community. In earlier days, money raised by members was used to fund Well Baby Clinics and the Carrboro Health Center. Later, money raised by the League was given to an increasing number of recipients, including the Chapel Hill Public Library, the Chapel Hill School Endowment Fund, the South Orange County Rescue Squad, the Inter-faith Council for Social Services, Ronald McDonald House, UNC Department of Pediatrics and many, many more. In recent years, the League has focused its efforts on issues that relate to women and children.
The League has provided additional community support in the form of grants to other local non-profit organizations and college scholarships awarded to deserving high school seniors.
Fundraising efforts have been as varied as the list of recipients. Our members have sold everything from gumballs to cookbooks. We have danced at Galas, played bridge at tournaments and held tag sales. The Country Store, a gift shop run by the League in University Mall, was an important source of revenue until it closed in 1997.
Work has already begun on our latest fundraising venture! On December 14, 2008, the League will be hosting the 5th annual Southern Village Holiday 5K and Family Fun Run. This sanctioned race has been held for the last four years and has raised almost $80,000 for charity. League members are involved in all aspects of organizing and running this race, including fundraising and marketing. This is a fabulous opportunity for the League to make a greater impact on the community.
